Abstract
This analytical study explores how Islamic modest dressing promotes moral values among Muslim students in Colleges of Education in North Central Nigeria. Guided by Qur’anic teachings and Prophetic traditions that link modesty to faith and ethical conduct, the research assessed compliance with Islamic dress codes, their relationship with moral development, challenges to adherence, and possible solutions. Using a survey approach with questionnaires and interviews involving students, lecturers, and administrators from selected institutions, the study found that modest dressing is widely viewed as fostering discipline, self-control, and moral uprightness. Compliance is generally high and strongly influenced by religious knowledge. However, peer pressure, social media, modern fashion trends, limited orientation, and inconsistent enforcement hinder full adherence. Respondents supported orientation programmes, regular Islamic lectures, collaboration among parents, lecturers, administrators and religious leaders, and consistent policy enforcement as effective strategies. The study concludes that modest dressing remains a key tool for character formation and recommends sustained religious education and multi-stakeholder efforts to strengthen Islamic ethical values in these colleges.
